Training the Trainers in June 08: Another resounding success! by Jess Levene

The 14th Training the Trainers course took place in June at Cumberland Lodge, bringing the number of those trained to 234. "The best course I have ever attended!" Maria Liddy, Wandsworth LA

Being held in Windsor Great Park brought an air of sophistication to the event with many of us wishing we’d brought big floaty Victorian dresses to wear!

Since the first course in 2004, local authorities have been transformed with school council responsibilities moving from pillar to post. This has meant that delegates have come from a broad range of areas including Healthy Schools, the youth service, advisory teachers and inspectors.

The diversity of the group created a vibrant atmosphere with participants learning huge amounts from each others experience as well as from the course.

“The venue was absolutely fantastic & the group was brilliant. I have learnt so much and felt supported by them and the trainers, who were excellent”

Debbie Edwards, Essex LA

We were joined by two school councils who were a source of much discussion as well as our guest speaker Jack Lewars from ESSA (English Secondary Schools Association).

Supporting schools to have effective school councils that involve the whole school and address core issues, is central to all of our work. Training the Trainers continues to increase the capacity of local authorities to meet these needs as well as fulfilling the Every Child Matters agenda.

“My knowledge and confidence in supporting schools in this area has improved immeasurably” Wendy Smith, Buckinghamshire LA

We loved the venue so much that after discussing the issue with our delegates from Scotland, Wales, Barnsley and Wigan we're hoping to use it for the next course in Jan 09.
