When you go to the Carbon Detectives website and register, you are asked a series of questions about your school and then you get started by registering on the site if you haven't already done so! The steps are as follows:

1. REGISTER ON THE CARBON DETECTIVE SITE.

2. CREATE YOUR TEAM.

This can be whole school council or you can create a sub-group of pupils who are keen to follow this through. You should also think about who else in the school you will need to work with, as it’s better to involve them at the start. These ‘helpers’ can be either full or part time members of the Team, and might include: The bursar or school finance officer, a school governor, science teacher, caretaker...

3. EXPLORE AND MEASURE

The next steps are about looking at what is happening in the school at the moment, and you can use this as a way to involve the whole school in what you are doing. There are surveys involving the whole school, and projects for the Team (and helpers) to work on by themselves.

When you’ve brought together all the information the Toolkit works out what your carbon footprint looks like and helps you to set targets.

When you have your results you are ready to plan your actions.

To help you there are some Action Ideas, and you can get together to work out ‘Pledges’ and write out your action plans. There is lots of help on the site to help you work out which plans might work the best.
