History of School Councils UK

School Councils UK was formed in 1993, (registered charity number: 1090137), and grew out of pioneering work carried out on housing estates in Liverpool. As it became clear that many young people did not feel listened to in their schools our focus shifted towards education.

We are the leading providers of training and resources designed to help pupils and teachers establish and develop effective school councils. Working with schools at all levels, we believe that real partnerships between pupils and staff are the key to school improvement.

Based in Camden Town, North London, we now have 12 staff. Freelance consultants around the UK carry out much of our training work, and we are always looking to recruit experienced training associates.

While we receive project grants from several agencies and trusts including the Department for Chidren, Schools and Famalies, our running costs are largely met by our income from the sale of training, resources and network membership.

We work in partnership with Local Authorities and organisations involved in furthering pupil participation and active citizenship. These include the the English Secondary Students' Association, the National Children's Bureau, The Children's Society, NSPCC, Save the Children and the Association for Citizenship Teaching.
