Portway Junior School

Pupils at Portway Junior School in Andover, Hampshire have been exploring what life is like in the Big Smoke!

portwat school groupRepresentatives of the School Council travelled to Plaistow to visit with their cousins – Portway Primary School in the borough of Newham. Links were made between the two schools last year on the discovery of their shared name, and there have been several exchanges of staff and pupils since.

There are many similarities as well as differences between the two schools and the pupils have thoroughly enjoyed discovering these and developing some firm friendships. Children from Portway Andover enjoyed their time in London finding their way around another school, discovering the many differences in languages and cultures and broadcasting their thoughts on the school radio! They learnt to greet each other and share some phrases and poems in Swahili, Yoruba and Gaelic – to name just a few of the languages used at the London school.

We gathered at the stadium and were treated to a guided tour; visiting the media room, the Away Dressing Room and the Home Dressing Room (which was a lot more luxurious!). We saw the plunge pools, lay on the massage tables and tried (in vain) to lift some of the weights in the gym. Finally we got to run through the corridor to the pitch itself where we admired the size of the stadium, enjoyed the echoes of our shouts to each other from the stands and imagined just what it would be like to play for the Hammers.

We thoroughly enjoyed the day and are hugely grateful to the staff and pupils of Portway Primary School for inviting us to London and for arranging such a great day for us. We are very much looking forward to continuing to develop our relationship and getting to know each other better.
