Free school council resources from Sainsbury's by Asher Jacobsberg

Over the last few years Sainsbury's Active Kids vouchers have allowed schools to get all kinds of free sporting and cookery equipment and experiences, but Sainsbury's wants to make Active Kids even bigger and better and they want school councils to tell them how to do it.

So Sainsbury's came to School Councils UK and we helped them develop two toolkits about consultation which you can download for free from their website, www.get-talking.co.uk.

Sainsbury's want Active Kids to help pupils in lots of different areas, not just sports and healthy eating, but all kinds of after-school and lunch-time activities.  They also want Active Kids to give pupils experiences in enterprise, music and green issues.

But Sainsbury's knows that the way to develop the best Active Kids programme is to get pupils, through their school councils, to help them.

So using the toolkits, or other methods you already use for getting opinions from your school your school council could run a consultation on what support your school would like from Sainsbury's.

Consultations and surveys can be a great way for a school council to raise its profile and at the same time find out from the people who matter what the council should be doing.

But you need to make sure that people know what is going to happen to their suggestions:

  • Will you be able to put all of their suggestions into practice?
  • How will you decide on which suggestions you act on?
  • When and how will you tell them the results of the survey and what you're going to do now?

As well as the free toolkits, Sainsbury's are also giving out some great prizes to the schools that make the best contributions.  You can win loads of School Councils UK resources, Active Kids vouchers and the chance to become Active Kids Consultants.  Consultants will get to go to regional events with training and the chance to write the Active Kids Manifesto.

At the same time as asking your school about what Sainsbury's can do, you could also be finding out what they want your school council to be doing.  You can usually slip in a couple more questions whether you're doing a questionnaire, online-survey, interviews or assemblies - just be careful not to make it too long!
